Tough stretch for Royals as playoffs quickly approach

Darryl G. Smart

Suffice to say the Langton Royals Jr Hockey Club have played a ton of hockey in the last week.

After playing four games last Wednesday when they hosted the Canadian Premier Junior Hockey League West Division Showcase, the Royals also had a full weekend playing Saturday and Sunday as well. Unfortunately for them, its been the first time all season that the first-year team has had to deal with some adversity, going 1-5 during that stretch.

During the showcase they hosted at the Tillsonburg Arena, the Royals began the day with a 8-4 loss to the Seaforth Generals

Carson Favel, Justyn Clark, Juliusz Kowalski, Connor Arndt scored for the Royals.

Owen Haik led the Generals with three goals, while Travis Sloan, Ethan Gordon, Patrick Richichi, Donald Kuptana, and Shayne Thruber added singles.

Next was a 3-0 loss to the Severn Stallions.

Caleb Bylan, Dylan Beatie, and Jared Weatherbee scored in the victory, while Brendan Keeler earned the shutout.

The Royals offensive problems continued, with a 2-0 loss to the Generals.

Raul Barbo had the shutout, while Haiek and Gordon provided the goal scoring.

In the final game of the showcase, the Royals got a goal from Jack Dorey in the third period to give them a 3-2 win over the Stallions.

Malcolm Gamelin scored two goals for the Royals.

Jacob Smith and Gilmore scored for the Stallions.

On Saturday, the Royals hit the road to face the Stallions, who rode three goals in the third period to defeat their guests 5-2.

Felix Mailhot and Gamelin scored for the Royals.

Jared Weatherbee led the Stallions with a pair of goals, while Christopher Champagne, Sammy Spencer, and Joshua Jones all netted one.

And finally, on Sunday, the Generals handed the Royals a 2-1 loss in Langton.

Harley Werminsky scored the game’s opening goal, before Cedric Beck and Jeff Fritzley responded for the Generals.

Despite the tough stretch, the Royals now focus on rebounding back and focusing on the post season.

On Sunday, the Royals, who are now 17-12-0-3-2, wrap up the regular season on the road against the Generals at 7:30pm.
