Royals make some big depth moves

By Darryl G. Smart

The Langton Royals Jr Hockey Club bulked up for a run at the Canadian Premier Junior Hockey League playoffs.
First, the Royals added Nicholas Papineau, Dawson Leblanc-Peltier, and Dominic Mills.
Papineau and Leblanc-Peltier come via the now defunct Ottawa Sharpshooters of the Greater Metro Junior Hockey League. The team ceased operations right before the new year.
“I am excited about these guys coming in. I am hoping they add the added depth we need for a great second half of the season,” Royals head coach and general manager Jason DoPaco said.
The next day, DoPaco swung a huge deal with the Muskoka Anglers.
Alexis Gagne heads to the Anglers for defensemen Connor Arndt.
“This was a good deal for everyone involved,” DoPaco said. “Alexis works hard and will help Muskoka, as well as see more ice time. Connor provides us with a younger player eager to learn and get better and added future to the team moving forward into year two and three.”
But DoPaco wasn’t done yet.
The Royals then sent 15-year-old Drayden Sylvester to the Smith Falls Settlers in return for goalie Ryan Price-Letson.
“I am hoping Ryan comes in here with the same attitude our other two goalies have which is to get better every day,” DoPaco said. “I am looking for him to push both our guys and earn his games as I expect from all of our players and goalies.”
When it was time to hit the ice, the weather played havoc with the Royals schedule. But on Sunday, after a pair of postponements, they got back to action.
Despite the Royals scoring the first goal of the game Sunday at home, the Severn Stallions came away with a 4-1 victory.
Filip Mica scored the lone Royals goal of the game early in the second period, before Jacob Ljungstrom and Jake Grinnell responded. Austin Gilmore and Carson Latimer added to the cause in the third period.
Trevor Slaven made 43 stops in the loss for the Royals, while Brendan Keeler had 38 saves for the Stallions.
The Royals are now 12-4-0-2-1, and sit in fifth place in the CPJHL standings.
Friday they begin a home-and-home set with the Wexford Raiders on the road at 7:30pm. The return date in Sunday at 2pm.
