The Brantford Red Sox never panicked on the road Tuesday against the Hamilton Cardinals.
Down 2-0 heading into the ninth inning, the Red Sox made the Cardinals pay for a couple of mistakes, coming all the way back to win 5-3 in 11 innings in Intercounty Baseball League action.
Colton Fountain scored the winning run two batters into the 11th inning, and Matthew Pilarczyk knocked in Jesse Fishbaum with an RBI single to seal the victory.
In the ninth inning down by two runs, Zach Lampreia and Gianfranco Morello both scored thanks to a pair of wild pitches, while Fishbaum scored to temporarily go ahead after Jacob Reid got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Gianfranco Morello, Fountain, and Pilarczyk were the only three Red Sox batters to record a hit.
Austin Wheeler drove in two runs for the Cardinals, while Justin Gideon knocked in the other. Tristan Osika went 2-for-4.
In this pitcher’s duel, Mackezie Major got the win thanks to his two scoreless innings of work. Jacob English started the game and was brilliant on the mound. He may have only struck out one, but kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard for five hitless innings.
Spencer Bak took the loss, allowing a run on one hit with two strikeouts in the 11th inning. Matt Duffy was equally great, throwing over seven scoreless innings, giving up two hits and striking out 12 without issuing a walk.
The Red Sox improve to 2-6 and have three games in four days beginning Thursday in Welland against the Jackfish at 7:30pm. Friday they host the Kitchener Panthers at 8pm, and finish up Sunday, on the road at 2pm against the Cardinals.
